tyson after clambake

I just watched the new Josh Pyke video clip with my friend Tyson in it. The funny thing about it is that Tyson puts on these awesome beach parties and I can't help but think that they actually just filmed him on Monday at work after Clambake (what the parties are called). I swear you can't understand how much sand can get into places until you have been to one of these parties... my jeans still have remnants of sand in the pocket from about 2 years of beach parties... anyway here's the video. Go Tyson!

Breeders

First day of not having to go to work... what a great feeling. It's fun to do those things you've always wanted to be able to do during the week. Wake up late, go to cafe for coffee and morning paper read... ahh.
But one thing i totally realised is that I am now in the land of new mothers. Super duper prams with the mothers all wearing running clothes and sneakers - and usually there is some pooch on a leash attached to the handle of the pram. And they all meet up with other new mothers and talk about the consistancy of baby vomit & that Howard's Storage has these really amazing set of draws that are perfect for baby wipes etc.
ahhhh.... i mean i don't want to sound like a bitch but Jesus!! are these people for real?? they are prototypes and its a wonder that they don't feel embarrassed when they see each other. Like when you see someone with the same outfit on as you.

Pierrot

when i was a kid I was always given a Pierrot clown in some form by my Grandmother. One year she even made me a Pierrot ceramic lamp. I had that lamp next to my bed for my whole childhood and for some reason whenever I see a Pierrot clown I have an overwhelming sense of nostalgia and connection to these unique sad beautiful female clowns. Well they are usually female... I went on the hunt for some cool images of the Pierrot clown..
and you can read the story of the Pierrot clown here. It's funny that there was a relationship there with Harlequin.. but don't look up harlequin clowns in google cause i came across a skin disease called Harlequin Ichthyosis -which is truly disgusting and scary (not for the faint hearted if do persue---baby's look like demonic creations) NOW you want to look don't you???
oh and Robots in Disguise did a song and video clip that told the story of Pierrot - also features Noel Fielding from the Mighty Boosh. Watch it.

loving old school Janet Jackson - God i loved this album 'Rhythm Nation' it was so cool i think i was 13 when it came out. I remember girls at school having baseball caps with metal decorations that said 'cool' or 'hot'. This was such a flash in the pan 90's style-- and janet just pushed it all the way. Check out the rhythm nation mickey mouse.

Jean-Charles de Castelbajac A/W09

Came across these amazing dresses that were part of Jean-Charles de Castelbajac's Paris Fashion Week show. I love it when fashion meets costume meets pop culture - it makes such a statement and makes the whole fashion game seem worthwhile. These are at least pieces of art rather than just draping of fabric over a thin body.

sneezing in the sun

A friend was at my house on the weekend... he was lying on the couch and started to awkwardly crane his head back to the window..."what are you doing?" i asked, he didn't answer and had this weird face.. i thought he was having a fit. "Are you trying to look at the sun to sneeze? " " YEP - Waachooo!" he sneezed.
Why do people do that?? does it really work?? relying on the sun to get something out of you.. it's crazy!

I did some research:

Sneezing as the result of being exposed to a bright light—known as the photic sneeze reflex—is a genetic quirk that is still unexplained by science, even though it has intrigued some of history's greatest minds.

Aristotle mused about why one sneezes more after looking at the sun in The Book of Problems: "Why does the heat of the sun provoke sneezing?" He surmised that the heat of the sun on the nose was probably responsible.

Some 2 ,000 years later, in the early 17th century, English philosopher Francis Bacon neatly refuted that idea by stepping into the sun with his eyes closed—the heat was still there, but the sneeze was not (a compact demonstration of the fledgling scientific method). Bacon's best guess was that the sun's light made the eyes water, and then that moisture ("braine humour," literally) seeped into and irritated the nose.

Basically they can't work it out --- same with rolling your tongue. Ah the human body... what a mystery.

withnail and i

I was recently trawling through some of my fav sites and i found a posting from Gavin McInnes (who i think is f&*( great). He drawed attention to one particular scene in Withnail and I with this to say about it:

"..... a facial expression towards the end when Withnail realizes the party is over. His “Congratulations” is so exquisitely insincere, it has to be watched at least 7 times in a row to truly appreciate."

I have watched this over and over and there IS something quite exquisite & hypnotic in the delivery of this line. In this one moment Richard E Grant seems to embody what actors are told by Directors to do. "I want you to be happy & postive on the outside by you are quietly dying on the inside...OK?... GO!"

Truly a brilliant moment in cinema!

inspired

I saw 'man on wire' last night and felt justified in my thinking about the endless limits of intention. This man's life journey highlights that if you want something.. even if it is seemingly (or completely) impossible and you put all your energy into getting that thing. You can achieve it!
I'm really beginning to understand that notion...

mum in the 60's

Mum recently sent my sister and I some photos of her in the 60's. So beautiful! She really had the innocent girl-next-door look down. Ainslie definitely looks like her but some say I do -- I'm trying to find it.
