I was recently trawling through some of my fav sites and i found a posting from Gavin McInnes (who i think is f&*( great). He drawed attention to one particular scene in Withnail and I with this to say about it:

"..... a facial expression towards the end when Withnail realizes the party is over. His “Congratulations” is so exquisitely insincere, it has to be watched at least 7 times in a row to truly appreciate."

I have watched this over and over and there IS something quite exquisite & hypnotic in the delivery of this line. In this one moment Richard E Grant seems to embody what actors are told by Directors to do. "I want you to be happy & postive on the outside by you are quietly dying on the inside...OK?... GO!"

Truly a brilliant moment in cinema!
